National History
On October 22, 1989, a group of 19 women came together to form a support group for Latina women at the University of Iowa. Later the five founding mothers, Gloria Cuevas, Julieta Miller, Danelle Riojas, Maria Pineda, and Guadalupe Temiquel broke the barriers of traditional sororities by creating a sorority for women of all cultural backgrounds. After much work and dedication, the Panhellenic Council at the University of Iowa recognized Sigma Lambda Gamma as a sorority on April 9, 1990.
